Introducing BackYourStack

We started a tool to help companies discover their open source dependencies that seek financial support. Here’s the back story.

BackYourStack is Live! 🚀🚀

The past couple of years we’ve been working to help open source communities become sustainable, by providing them with a mechanism to raise funds and spend them transparently. It is so exciting to see incredible projects in the javascript, python, drupal and ruby communities on Open Collective, managing their finances transparently and getting paid for their open source work.

At the same time, it is very clear that most of the companies using them don’t know these projects are raising funds, or how to support them. Open Source became the default option for companies around the world, but the community’s sustainability efforts are still widely unknown.

BackYourStack is the first step to help companies discover the dependencies in their stack that are seeking to become sustainable and a way to start subscriptions to them. Each collective can set up different tiers for their subscriptions such us brand visibility, support or in-house training.

We want to arm champions in all companies with tools to make the case internally for supporting the projects they depend on.

BackYourStack is the first step to help companies discover the dependencies in their stack that are seeking to become sustainable and a way to start subscriptions to them.

BackYourStack was started by Open Collective but it is a tool for the community to use and own. Please check out our repo, we would love for BackYourStack to provide more detection patterns and also feature other financing strategies (outside of Open Collective).

We believe firmly that together we can build the tools that will make open source communities around the world thrive and be sustainable for the future.

Try it out and share it, we are very much looking forward to working with you!
